Welcome to T. W. Hunter and welcome to 6th grade math. We hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready for an awesome year. One of our goals as your child’s teacher is to make the transition from elementary school to middle school as painless as possible. Just know that your questions and/or concerns are always welcome. The easiest and quickest form of communication is via class website, but if that is not convenient for you, feel free to email . Below you will find some basic information as it pertains to our classrooms.
Supplies (from the basic supply list) *5-subject spiral notebook(preferably with pocket divders) *plenty of pencils (regular or mechanical) *plenty of paper *red pens *notecards *glue sticks *scissors ****recommended*** Pencil pouch
Math Grading Emphasis 40% Tests 30% Quizzes (announced and unannounced) 20% Classwork/Homework* 10% Participation *homework will be assigned several times weekly. On most days, students will be given some time in class to start the assignment. We will grade the homework assignment in class the next day. Not every problem will be graded, but at least one problem from each section will be to ensure that each skill is assessed. Students are responsible for making necessary corrections. If all problems were initially completed and all corrections are made, the student will receive an A. If homework is not completed before class begins, the student will receive a “0”, and will be asked to complete the assignment that night. Points will be deducted from the student’s grade for each day the assignment is late and no assignment will be accepted after one week from the original due date.
Also, remember that TCAP scores are calculated into students’ final grades.Along with TCAP testing of current state standards, the state is making a gradual change to the new Common Core State Standards. As of now, 46 states are making this change. There are actually fewer Common Core standards which will allow teaching and learning to go into more depth. The testing that accompanies these new standards is much different than the current multiple choice type of testing. Therefore, your child will probably feel a little unsure and less confident when we approach these types of problems. We understand that and will do our best to make this a smooth transition. We will further discuss these changes at the open house.
Absences In the event that a student is absent from class, it is the student’s responsibility to get any work or notes missed. Work must be made up within three school days of the student’s return to school. There is a calendar in the back of your child’s classroom that indicates daily classwork and homework assignments.
Communication *agenda book – We expect every student to write down all assignments that are given at the beginning of each week.
We look forward to working with you and your child this year. We would like to thank you for entrusting us with your child and promise to make this year as rewarding as possible. Please sign and write your email address on the next page and have your child return it as soon as possible. Thank you!
